Zapatistas Practice Herbal Medicine

In Chiapas, medical aid and assistance is difficult to find. As we reported some months back, indigenous Mayan “Health Promoters” in Chiapas have begun teaching their communities about basic nutrition and hygeine, as well as providing some medical services.
The have also begun renewing the traditions of their ancestors by using herbal alternatives to treat medical problems dealt with pharmaceutically in places where resources are more available. Oventic, where our correspondent travelled to bring you this episode, is the center of the Mayans herbal medicine practice.
Due to the low intensity conflict in Chiapas, it is by turning to tradition that the indigenous Mayans of the Zapatista communities are able to preserve their autonomy. For more information about those working to preserve the herbal and other traditions of the Mayans, please see OMIECH’s website.

En las comunidades zapatistas se impulsan proyectos para fortalecer su autonomia, un ejemplo de ello es el uso de medicina tradicional, como la herbolaria por parte de los Promotores de Salud que son los encargados de prevenir y resolver los problemas de las comunidades.
AiM estuvo en Oventik, Chiapas, donde se encuentra uno de los centros de preparación de medicina herbal.
En estas zonas las comunidades han desconocido al gobierno local y nacional y han creado Juntas de Buen Gobierno donde pulsan proyectos para resolver las necesidades de salud, alimentación, vivienda, trabajo y alimentación.
Los centros de trabajo colectivo abarcan áreas como la fabricación de zapatos, la comercializacion de artesania y elaboración de ropa, así como han construido clinicas y centros de salud con medicina tradicional y pero tambien con medicina farmaceutica y capacidad quirurgica.
